University of Buckingham Overview

The University of Buckingham is the only independent university with a Royal Charter in the United Kingdom. It continues to operate an Oxbridge-style tutorial system and currently maintains a body of 2,000 students from 90 countries. The University has been leading the UK’s National Student survey for student satisfaction since 2006, with its English, Business, and Law Departments all ranking highly.

The main campus is in Buckingham, but foundation-level teaching also takes place in London and Oxford and the University was formed by a group of Oxford academics in 1973 inspired by the American college model. As an independent university, its staff-to-student ratio is currently 1:10.4 - much lower than many other institutions in the UK.

1 + 2 Foundation and Undergraduate Degree Pathway

The University of Buckingham offers a unique ‘1+2’ option (a foundation programme and undergraduate degree with honours in just three years).  This is made possible due to Buckingham’s innovative term structure, but does not lead to an increased workload for its students on a day-to-day basis.

The Foundation year can be taken on-campus in Buckingham, or in Central London or Oxford via the University’s partnership with the Oxford House College Group.

Pathway degrees available include:

  • LLB Law
  • BA (Hons) Communication, Media and Journalism
  • BA (Hons) (Econ) Economics
  • BSc (Hons) Business Enterprise
  • BSc (Hons) Accounting and Financial Management
  • BSc (Hons) Computing

University of Buckingham Services for International Students

The University of Buckingham provides several courses and classes to help students adjust to life in England. In addition, an English Language Centre is available for further tuition in academic, business and written English. With more than half of its students hailing from overseas, Buckingham has a proven track record of meeting the requirements of its international students.

Applications to the university can be made, free of charge, online through its website for all levels of study.
