Overview

Since 1969, Sotheby’s Institute of Art has pioneered the education of arts professionals whose careers have placed them at the centre of the international art world. With campuses in London, New York and Los Angeles, Sotheby’s Institute of Art offers graduate-level programmes and academic courses that integrate art, market expertise, and object-based learning. Through many paths of study, graduates gain the knowledge and credentials needed for success in today’s worldwide art markets and cultural institutions. This is enhanced by bringing students into direct contact with works of art through trips to museums, galleries, auction houses, and private collections.

Postgraduate programmes are validated by the University of Manchester, one of the largest and most prestigious universities in the UK and a member of the Russell Group. Programmes require two semesters of full-time study plus a third semester of independent study to complete a research dissertation.

Additionally, a number of semester and summer study opportunities are also available, as are short courses and executive education programmes. The 15-week semester programmes are run in autumn and spring of each academic year, some of which can be taken on a part-time basis, and cover a range of subject areas. 4-week intensive summer courses take place each summer.

Location

Sotheby’s Institute of Art is located in Bloomsbury, London, only minutes away from the British Museum and within walking distance of the National Gallery and Sotheby's auction house, as well as the University of London.

London is a city of traditional and modern art museums, private collections and international commercial galleries. Sotheby’s auction house was founded in the city in 1744 and its London offices are now part of a global network encompassing Europe, Asia and America. In London, one of the world’s leading centres of higher education, students can enjoy a wide array of facilities and activities, including international cultural events and a vibrant art scene. Sotheby's is also only a few minutes’ walk from other cultural highlights including the National Portrait Gallery, the Royal Academy and the Institute of Contemporary Arts.

Alumni

The Institute has over 6,000 alumni worldwide, many of whom direct galleries, work in museums, foundations and auction houses, or pursue careers in art journalism, consulting and related professions.

SI-UK's service is fast, reliable and efficient. Their consultants are specialists, working closely with all UK universities and, through my consultants' advice and application assistance, I was able to receive offers from my favoured universities.
